The four-way merger had been "in-the-air" among the independents since Mason first broached the subject in 1946-48. Many of the questions which we have now about why things worked or didn't work out as seemingly they should have is because we can't know the back channel discussions and negotiations that went on between Mason and Nance. Each was angling for advantage, colluding when it fit their personal purposes, manipulating when it didn't. The terrible irony is that no one would seriously act on mergers until their financial and market positions had become seriously degraded. Egos and hubris were the undoing of them all.
