Paraphrasing from page 89 of Terry Martin's fine book "PACKARD - the Warren Years", "...other changes (for 1901) were larger (34" x 4") tires and the decision to make red the standard body color".

This would substantiate that the color on John Hovey's 1901 shown in a photo a few posts ago is correct, RED.
