In my opinion, the straight-8's and V12's are smoother than most V8's. V8's need balance shafts and counterweights to make them smooth. V12's and I-8's (if timed right) are inhertley balanced....as are straight-6's. Secondly, as John pointed out in reference to Bugatti, Miller and Duesenberg......Packard was probably aiming at pretige...smoothness and class. There is always even firing on a V12, the pistons therefor balance themselves elimiating extra weight on the crankshaft by adding counter weights.
