If you've ever seen a cutout of a Fram filter vs. a Wix filter you'd confirm that suspicion West. The Fram is about the cheapest filter made, it has glued on cardboard ends on the element, as well as a poorer filtration element.

The Wix on the other hand, has a finer filtration element, and has metal ends to the element to help support it from collapsing.

Fram filters + Penzoil = Mutually Assured Destruction of an engine.
