This is not an opinion only information, readers may draw their own conclusion.

I examined the following factory service manuals form the appropriate period and found that the bearing in the front of the trans case had either an integral shield or a separate shield oriented to the rear.

I would estimate that there were over 50,000,000 vehicles manufactured like this .. I did not find any with the shield in any other orientation.
