It might fit in the hole although I think there is a difference in the cutout notches used to keep the switch from rotating. You would need the 54 bezel. I believe the bezels are the same as used on the 51. A new 54 switch is probably more expensive than a new 55 since it was one year only.

The Ford switch would probably need the Ford bezel -- unless your temporary retainer method would work. I believe they used a twist arrangement with "tabs" in a different location than the external pins Packard used in 55-6. Possibly, if it fits inside the Packard bezel the Ford switch housing neck could be drilled and tapped for short setscrews inserted to match the Packard pins.
