A Diesel engine compresses air up to the self ignition point of the diesel fuel. It doesn't need a carb to create a mixture but nozzles to blow in the diesel with high pressure. As you know Packard used injector nozzles in 1954. But Mal's pic shows an engine with downdraft carburetor and float valve.
