I actually served for 6 weeks aboard one the Packard-powered minesweepers, for my 3rd class midshipman cruise during the summer of 1972. That was the USS Esteem (MSO-438). The cruise started in Long Beach, up to San Francisco for some a minesweeping exercise with other wooden-hulled craft. On the return, liberty in Monterey, and back to Long Beach. The Packard propulsion performed flawlessly. I don't seem to recall whether it was equipped with an Ultramatic -- (just kidding, it was an Electromatic).
