Found on the Inter-webs in regards to why industry went to -Negative ground and reposted without opinion to validity:

It is partly a matter of convention and standards, and partly because positive earth(ground) encourages "galvanic corrosion" of the surrounding bodywork - whereas with negative earth (ground) is the much easier to replace electrical contacts that corrode.

Think back to school physics lessons with anodes and cathodes...
