With the 1938 dates on the last two clippings and the second article saying the unit was completely under the floor I would imagine these are the modified Trane units mentioned in the Henney book.

This implementation was pre Packard AC and book mentioned Henney had worked with Trane to repackage a standard commercial unit with a compressor driven by an electric motor to fit in the confined space. Book went on to mention there was a large generator bolted on the engine to provide 110v for the compressor motor.
