It is also most importaant to inspect the float STOP that keeps the float from rising too high and thus hitting the crankshaft.

Over the years i've seen "professional" rebuilt engines that had a clicking noise that would come and go. Only to remove the oil pan, see all shiny new bores, pistons , oil pumps etc but that the float wa hitting the crank because the float stop was either bent or broken or badly worn.

I've ran into this on t least 3 engines that i can recall over just the last 20 years.
