From what I understand, and that isn't much, weren't the V8 bodied cars a rework of the 51-54 straight 8's? Unless the V8's lost a lot of length in the engine compartment area the 6 might work with the usual challenges of sump clearance, fabricating new engine mounts and relocation of the radiator.
