head removal

hello fellow Packard people
I am trying to remove the head from my 1953 patrician with little luck. all the nuts are off, and 7 of the studs came out with the nuts. I tried cranking the engine with the plugs in, but not enough compression to pop the head. will it be ok to use a chisel to wedge between the block and head or will this cause great damage. don't want to cause more work. any thoughts are helpful and appreciated..
