For reasons still not yet understood, approximately the first third of 1940 production did not have a theft-proof or body serial number. Use of this numbering system began with the 6th Series and the only other time bodies without numbers is noted is a few scattered early 1955 vehicles.

1940 models without the number are seen both with and without the triangular end brackets.
