As a new vehicle it would almost certainly have been titled by the vehicle number which would have appeared on the metal patent or VN plate. That number would appear no where else on the car so once the plate is removed, the car would have to be titled by an alternative number, perhaps the motor number or perhaps the state would have assigned its own unique number.

Generally, once the plate goes missing, unless you can find the original VN from prior owners or old documents, your car's original number is not recoverable. An exception might be the earlier vehicle s built with composite wood frame and steel skin construction. Often the last few digits of the sequential portion of the VN can be found on structural wooden members, often in doors and seats.
