The "click" you normally hear is from the electo\mechanical contact in the flasher relay opening and closing. Some modern ones are solid state and do not have mechanical contacts. The dash indicators not working could be either a difference in the relay pinout or that they don't pull enough current to actuate.

If you want the "click" I would find the correct old style relay.
