I think I would try a close nipple too and as a bit of added seal use some Permatex #1 or #2 on the threads into the carb making sure to keep it well away from the end of the nipple so none gets in the carb. The issue with a close nipple is there is no good way to ensure it is tight in the carb or hold it while screwing the filter on without possible damage to the threads in a place you might need. You might thread it into the filter side first getting it reasonably tight and then use the filter body without the bowl attached to thread the nipple into the carb and tighten.
