Re: Identification of Packard transmissions

Borrowing a portion of L.T.R.D.'s photo, there is a good side by side comparison shot of transmission input shaft differences anyone looking for another trans to upgrade to overdrive might find useful.

The input shaft for the so called junior transmission used on all non senior engines is smaller than the shaft used for the 356. The larger diameter 356 shaft and transmission only fits that large engine. The clutch assy needed for the 356 trans is also larger as is the throwout bearing and sleeve assy.

If it has an R9 overdrive, the version used with the 356 trans is heavier duty with 4 pinion gears at the output whereas junior R9 overdrives have 3 pinion gears. If it has the R11 overdrive, the entire OD is simpler both electrically and mechanically and is of sturdier construction. It uses 3 pinion gears on both versions.
