It is also a good idea to use a battery maintainer when the cars are not used regularly. I have a 5-year old conventional type battery in my 99 BMW Z3 and a much older Optima in my 32 Ford Coupe. Both are on maintainers when not being driven and continue to perform well. I will replace the BMW battery when it fails with an Optima as it is in the trunk area of the car.
