The original gasket was copper but as I recall, back in the day auto parts places often sold a nylon washer to take the place of the original. If you replace the plug or just get a new or different type washer, make sure the sealing surface on the pan is smooth and flat. Unless the pan surface is free of burrs and gouges any new washer won't seal much better than the old washer or plug.
