Here are a some terms that threw me when I first read them in 50s British motoring magazines.
Lamp = light as in, headlamp for headlight or tail lamp for tail light.
Light = window as in, "6 light saloon" for some reason the windscreen and backlight don't count.
Windscreen = windshield
Backlight = rear window
Nearside/offside = left/right side of car
Nave plate = hubcap or possibly fender skirt I could never quite figure that one out.
Trafficator = turn signal
Motor rug = lap robe
Strangler = choke
Mascot = hood ornament
Gudgeon = wrist pin
Pantechnicon = moving van
King Dick spanner = monkey wrench
Gamages = J.C. Whitney
