Just for fun I thought it would be interesting to make a list of cars that had a straight 6 and straight 8 model, but never made a V8 before 1949.

Marmon, Stutz,Pierce Arrow, Packard, Chrysler,REO, Stearns. American luxury cars.

Pontiac, Olds, Buick, Studebaker, Hudson,Graham, Dodge, medium price cars.

European cars, Isotta Fraschini Daimler Bugatti and Mercedes. Eight cylinder cars over there were mightly scarce. Rolls had a six and a straight eight but also made a short lived V8 so they are disqualified.

I'm sure this list can be extended. It does illustrate that the V8 was hardly the dominant engine in the 20s 30s or 40s in fact, it had a vogue from 1914 to 1923 after that the superiority of the straight eight was established.
