Re: Fun with used cars

Had an open house here at Speedwell Garage as part of a Mid-Atlantic Packards meet. Strawberry shortcake for all.

Paul Delaney had a conversation with Dick Teague many moons ago in which Dick bemoaned the fact that because of tooling considerations Packard could not bring out the Clipper based convertible he wanted to compete in the Olds 98/ Buick Roadsmasher price class. It would have been called the Clipper Polo. Now Paul does revel in the unique (he has the original Everet Hatch drag race car), so he decided to make a Clipper Polo.

Last summer I fabricated beefy torque boxes and welded them behind new rockers on Pauls's other black 56 hardtop. Part of the open house entertainment was to remove the steel top, the next step before installing a salvaged top mechanism.

I let Paul take a ceremonial first cut before I finished up the decapitation. You can see the car is going to have very nice lines--and no I am not giving the crowd the finger, I am motioning Paul to come take the first Polo test drive. I am pleased to report that the underbody strengthening was a great success and the car is tight as a tick with less door gap motion than one would see on a Caribbean.
