Advise on a 288 cu inch

I would like some input from someone who has more information that I need. This is my first Packard, 1950 Deluxe 2 door sedan with a 3 speed manual and overdrive. Presently #5 cylinder has no compression which I assume is a stuck valve and #8 has 70lbs of compression; all other cylinders are 145-153lbs compression. How sturdy is the lower half of a 288 engine and do I have to overhaul the complete engine. I got an estimate here in Az and was told about $5K for a complete overhaul not withstanding have to do the clutch, brakes and other mechanical work. Sorry to have to say this but I am on a limited budget. I don't even have enough to buy birdseed for the coo-coo clock. I have not yet pull the inner fender to check on the valves but I did not notice any metallic residue in the pan. Can I assume(hate that word) that my lower half is usable? And approximately what the cost in redoing my clutch. Presently it will not go into reverse. Could that be just an adjustment problem?

Thanks for any info shared
Tommy
