What I do is stand on my head facing East and hope for the best when taking the photo. Just kidding!
You don't need to know in advance. Before uploading, simply edit and re-orient 90 degrees and Save (even if it already looks right side up in the device's display). Then edit and re-orient again properly and Save. It's much easier than it sounds and they'll be right side up when uploaded. This is for iPhone/iPad but I expect Android and others are similar.
