That's about what I started with when I was doing my restoration.
Either you shell out a bundle to a top notch chrome shop or you do the grunt work yourself.
First, have the unit stripped and heavy copper plate.
Take it home and carefully sand, leaving the copper to fill the pits.
Take it back and have another coat of copper applied,
Repeat, repeat, repeat...until the pits are filled...
ONLY THEN do you have it nickel plated and finally chrome plated.
Have patience...
