Recently I had to remove the pump again due to the distributor drive plate having gone missing (never did find it) and am about to reinstall it which I thought I could do properly this time from the Service manual but no such luck as its instructions presuppose that it was installed a certain way the first time. What is the default procedure? I presume I need to set to the #1 to TDC first but then what? I see no specific markings on the pump to go by. I didn't see a way to disassemble the solenoid further without unsoldering wires and such. I decided against it. Rotating the studs would be rather simple, I may do that. The solenoid does have a number stamped on it, which I'll need to look at and record when I get home. It's likely that it was used on other makes and models.

Regardless, I think most of my issues were due to the brushes being completely worn out. I don't think they were making much contact with the commutator. That and the wiring to and from the starter was ugly. But I will probably rotate those studs for good measure before I put the starter back in. No harm in that. So here's a recap:

two weekends ago I was able to install the gas tank and verify that it wasnt leaking and the fuel gauge worked. I put fluid in the rear end and got everything else buttoned up. I forgot the last hose I needed to close off the system, didnt realize that until I was already 2.5 hrs into my trip back to my folks place... thankfully it was the weekend of my brothers wedding and my inlaws were able to stop by the house and bring it with them. I did get it partially installed but decided to wait to fully close the system off since I didnt want to open the filter/drier to atmosphere if I wasnt 100% certain the system would hold a vacuum because I felt I wouldnt have enough time to address any issue/leak that may arise. good thing I didnt connect that hose.

The following weekend I was able to connect all hoses and pull a vacuum. Unfortunately once the vacuum pump was shut off the vacuum would creep back up to atmospheric pressure in less than a minute. Not good. Not knowing how to find a leak without a sniffer or pumping it full of dye I went to google and found a youtube video that said to pressurize the system with 30-70 PSI of shop air and listen for a leak. Well I found it!! it was the suction hose connection off of the evaporator. Removed the copper gasket, tightened the connection up and was able to pull 30 inHg and it held! while waiting for that I was having my mother go back and forth getting me belts that would work, found one that worked and was able to get the system charged up. I was only able to get the passenger side vent connected to the evaporator box, but I am thinking I may run a 3 in duct hose instead of the 4 in I got since there really isnt much room on the drivers side due to all the wiring. So I will run with one. So with the garage being 60-65 degrees it appeared I was getting about 40 degrees out of the … Tue, 19 Mar 2024 13:54:23 -0100 https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=268936 Re: Morticus' Packard 200 Deluxe Touring Edition [by kevinpackard] https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=268849 Project Blogs::Morticus' Packard 200 Deluxe Touring Edition
Quote:

Ross wrote:
Just lengthen the pull rod to the carb a bit until you like the way the trans upshifts. Sometimes a dry bearing will shed rust powder at the seal. A ujoint issue could cause the symptoms you are seeing and feeling. Some joints have a grease fitting, and some have to be taken apart to grease them. Joint that have a grease fitting will usually respond to being greased, but sometimes grease will not reach all 4 of the bearings, which will cause problems. If you take any joints apart, don't lose any of the needle bearings, and be sure to put each part back exactly as it was. It's best to replace all the joints instead of just one, and before taking the driveshaft loose, mark every part so that it can be put back exactly as it was. The lights were roughly $100 all in but you could do a little cheaper (I bought the 4-light bike set in case I needed to tear down the lights to install). The one pic is the remote signal with the bike light that I embedded in the housing. The back you can see the charging cable with a cap so I can recharge without taking these apart. The sale prices on these are not high enough to justify restorations on them, or even close. However, I see this as a blessing in disguise, as you can find cars in "pretty darn good" condition for not a whole lot ($6k–$9k) or even cars in great/restored condition for $15k–$20k. In time I believe this will attract a good number more enthusiasts to Packards of this era. Anyway I digress...

I've been thinking about it and to me, the most economical choice by far is to pick up on someone else's project, which you can often find by asking around. They aren't often advertised because it's the type of thing where then owner isn't necessarily planning on selling, but also doesn't have time to keep going on it.

Just as economical is getting one already in good interior/exterior shape but maybe needs some sorting mechanically. It's counterintuitive but having a great interior/exterior is much more valuable than a car that runs and drives great, because you can go through the mechanicals to get them in good shape for only a few thousand (and often much less), yet a redone interior can be $10k, chrome is the price of gold, painting takes forever, etc.

Some great recent examples of these are
- This project I found while tire-kicking a Cragislist ad for a different Packard (was in the same garage):
https://packardinfo.com/xoops/h… Sun, 19 Jun 2022 14:52:02 -0100 https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=245074 Re: Overdrive for 1939 packard [by BDeB] https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=244731 Project Blogs::Overdrive for 1939 packard
The one for sale by Highlander160 is not an R6 but is an R9A for Senior cars from 1940 to 1947 Tue, 07 Jun 2022 18:59:30 -0100 https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=244731 Re: 1940 Radiator thermostat rebuilds [by Joe Santana] https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=244605 Project Blogs::1940 Radiator thermostat rebuilds
My experience with the sylphon.

There were recommendations to have Automotive Restorations of NJ rebuild it, but they must cater to the Amelia and Pebble crowd because their price they quoted this morning was $795 to rebuild a 1940 sylphon. After I replaced the oil cooler, everything seemed fine, until the replacement oil cooler failed, this allowed most of the coolant to enter the engine crankcase.this happened overnight, not during operating the engine. I had the original oil cooler repaired, pressure tested, and changed my engine rebuilders recommended oil from Fischer Classic Car Motor oil SAE 20/50, to Valvoline VR1 SAE 30, I also reduced the oil pressure a bit. I have taken the car out 3 times now, and everything seems to be in good working order. I will say that the second time around, even having to make my own gaskets, as ordering new ones was not on my time table, I able to make the repairs in 5 hours less. Practice.
