It does not touch but rather spins around on the inside or outside of a spring loaded aluminum cup which is attached via a shaft to the needle. The spinning magnet sets up an eddy current around the cup which will try to drag the cup along with the magnet thus moving the needle. As long as the magnet spins consistently and smoothly the calibrated but light spring loaded cup and needle responds appropriately -- faster the rotation, stronger the eddy current force so higher the needle will move against the spring. If the magnet spin is erratic because of a dry bushing or a problem with the cable and magnet stops and then suddenly jerks with a quick and fast motion as something breaks free the cup reacts violently. That action can slam the needle into a stop and because the cup is a relatively heavy mass and the point where needle is pressed onto the shaft is very small the joining point on the shaft can break as the needle suddenly stops and often will twist off. I do have originals at my Oregon shop but I am not there right now. To my mind if the vent is positioned closer to the driver on the dash top or if something like a too thick or poorly contoured pad at the wrong spot is causing the front opening side of vent to tilt upward that would make the bottom half of the vent move closer to the cluster and socket.

The frontal photo was take as straight as possible thru the steering wheel to get a good relation to instruments but because of the wheel opening was taken a little to the left of center of vent. It shows though that the left edge of the vent looks to be almost center of speedo. That looks to put the indicator light about in the center of the vent. The tape measure shot was taken thru windshield with the end of tape touching windshield above the trim strip. Front to back I believe the vent opening is positioned at the center of the dip in the contour of dash top.

I don't remember where or what the round depression in the vent bottom was clearance for but do know there was no issue in connecting to the rubber duct. When filled with fluid and spun, the vanes push the fluid in a circular path around the turbine (rotary flow), and hence the resulting centrifugal force draws the fluid from the center to the extremity of each turbine. Whichever spins faster, the fluid has more centrifugal force, and so will drive the other; likewise, the amount of fluid transfer between the two is heavily related to the difference in their rotary speed. Generally this difference is highest on initial acceleration, so there is a great velocity of fluid flowing from the center to the extremity of the driving turbine then into the extremity of the driven one (vortex flow); however, the momentum of the rotary flow (the flow in the direction of turbine rotation) is not great, and the torque transmitted is not satisfactory by this arrangement alone. To correct this deficiency, the torque converter has two additional turbines, which combined, utilize most of the remaining energy in the vortex flow to convert it to additional torque (hence the name "torque converter"). The fluid, because of the reaction force of flying through the (first) driven turbine, actually is afterwards flowing in the opposite corkscrew direction as what could drive another turbine in the correct direction. So, it flows through a "reactor" turbine (so named because it provides a reaction force) whose blades reverse the corkscrew direction of the fluid after which it directly flows into the second turbine which, being directly connected to the first driven turbine, provides additional torque to the output shaft.

At higher car speeds the difference in rotary speeds of the two halves of the torque converter is minimal, so the effects of the reactor are not needed, and it is most beneficial overall for the reactor to spin with the other parts (with the fluid). This is why … Fri, 17 Nov 2023 22:11:24 -0100 https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=264580 Re: In the dark [by Kiff Rule] https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=264361 V-8 (1955-56)::In the dark
This makes sense as my low beams are useless - so i used bright - and they cut out just before i pulled into my driveway.

I'm sending the car out for a major refurbishment (as it was completely restored in 2007) - so I'll have those good people tackle that and everything else. Remember that I had detached points A, B, & D in order to get to the clip on C. Since everything was detached from the windows I replaced the leather washers with nylon ones.

1) I attached points B and C as required (Note: In order to ensure that D stayed in its track, I drilled the door panel at both ends where the track ended and screwed sheet metals screw so I couldn’t come loose).

2) I inserted the motor which was attached to spring/gear mechanism

3) Raise the window to the top (I cramped a pair of Vise Grips on the window frame to hold it in place

4) I loosely attached the motor with a single screw to the door at point E

5) Remove the nut on F so the “X” bars can around float

6) At this point you should be able to insert C into the arm by energizing the motor with 12 VDC (one wire is up the other is low) to get the pin near the hole in the arm. You will need the flex the metal arm away from the slot. A high window gives more flexibility of the arm but is harder to reach. To lower the window, you will need to energize the motor with 12 VDC. I lower the widow just far enough that I could reach it. I used a 3/4” wide piece of steel bar and inserted it between the slot on the window and the metal arm. By rotating the steel bar 90 or so degrees you can flex the arm away from the slot on the window. By playing with the motor, you should be able to slip the pin in place

8) Place and secure nut F

9) Finish screwing motor to window

10) Clip pin A, which is easier by lowing the window 4 inches… Wed, 04 Oct 2023 15:12:28 -0100 https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=262412 Re: Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch Problem [by HH56] https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=262404 V-8 (1955-56)::Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch Problem
That little fact has caught others too. It's been a long time since I read it. I wish I could find it right now.

Basically, from what I can remember, Dexron produces a smooth slide into engagement, so the valve body is calibrated to apply the clutch quickly and let the fluid do all the work of smoothing things out. Meanwhile, Type F tends to slip a lot at first then suddenly grab, so the valve body is calibrated to apply the clutch much more gradually. I do not remember it saying anything about the old Type A fluids.

Those differences between Dexron and Type F were only during dynamic friction situations where the clutch is slipping during a shift. I think it said that the static or holding friction properties are the same between them, which means Type F will do nothing to stop your direct drive clutch from slipping under load. I would expect that with the small supply orifice, the Vane vacuum pump would be in no danger of damage. I fed the extracted oil/vacuumed air return line into the filler cap as it is handy and seemed a logical place to put it. I used a small in line cock fitting to divert a small fraction of the vacuum to extract any bell housing oil leakage. There was a port to fit a vacuum gauge so I did so. The vane pump generates reasonable vacuum and works the wipers well under all conditions. If the auto park circuit is trying to keep it in park and you manually force it to try and go the other direction there will be a conflict.
