Hi

Owen: You are fortunate to be in a hot bed of Packard activity, must be very enjoyable.

Of that Lincoln Convertible Phaeton by Derham, that was a design built under license from Hibbard & Darrin according to Hugo Pfau. It's such an elegant design, looks great even with the top down, but has lousy rear visibility with it up. Humm, elegant and impractical, the measure of a true custom body! A '29 645 with that body is pictured in the Crestline text on page 230, dearly wish it had survived.

The other variation with the same architecture is the convertible coupe, found on a variety of Classic chassis. Those few 745 models with that body are just unbelievably beautiful cars. I recall how stunned I was by one that appeared at Hershey years ago. Pierce-Arrow noticed how fine that convertible coupe looked, based their subsequent convertible coupe on that design......wish Packard had too!

Graham sharknose lover here as well. While they didn't sell very well here, the French were nuts for them. There were some pretty wild avant-garde custom bodies done on that chassis to go with the wild frontal styling.

Steve

Fantastic Engine Noise Problem
Home away from home
Home away from home

Tim Cole
I'm going to try to get a picture of this 12th series Packard Eight problem up because I've never seen anything like it.

In the mean time here is a symptom list:

a) Intermittent gear like rattle that sometimes sounds like a loose water pump bearing and changes to tappet like rattle.

b) Noise most prominent on valve side of motor.

c) Moves around motor from front to middle to back.

d) Testing with stethoscope excluded water pump, timing chain, and fuel pump.

e) Sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't.

f) Non-load and non-temperature sensitive.

Good luck and congradulations to anyone who has seen something similar. I have a file of wierdo noises, but this one takes the cake.

Hint, I have included the cause within this posting.

I believe the 327 engine is a "drop in" for the 288. It would be interesting to get the engine# and see if it's a 5 or 9 main bearing version.

Would you be so kind when you see the car again to get me the embossed firewall # (thief-proof) and the Briggs body # (small tag near heater)? Many thanks.

I'd consider the 52 200 sedan as an "entry level" Packard; the price could vary considerably based on condition but should be quite modest. Price guides are just that, guides, but one I use often shows a low of $1425 for poor but complete, to about $10,000 for an 85-95 point car. $15,000 for a "perfect" one.

I just found out that a neighbor has a 1952 Packard 200 Sedan in restorable condition. ( Basically all there, but the interior is not very good. ) VN is 2562-23496. THe engine appears to be a 327. Are 327's a popular replacement engine? Any ideas on what a car like this is worth ballpark-wise?

I done that and I did not see it anywhere

Perhaps you were looking in the Condensed Shop Manual, the info is in the full manual. Also if you can locate the 1937 Salesman's Data Book, it should give full major dimensions for all bodies.

PackardWillys I'm sure you can't wait to get one of those 55 Pats on the road!

I drove mine to the local supermarket this AM and was swarmed by about 40 French tourists when I drove up. Despite the language barrier, they were all smiles, thumbs up and clicking cameras. There were even several good looking youngish French women in the admiring crowd.

I'm sure you'll have the same kind of experience, hopefully soon.

Try browsing the last page of the 37/38 shop manual which may be available on this website - it shows the body space for each of the models. Body space for a 1502 is 100-3/4", same as the 1508.
