49packard, My '47 was built in July so must have missed the reverse lockout uprade.
tolandis, Good to hear that the OD is working. I had trouble with my governor as well but managed to get it working by adjusting the points. Mine has the two contact E.Clutch version.

Hi Mal, I see you are also busy cleaning engine parts the same as me. It's great to see these when they are finished with a new coat of paint! I am just very thankfull for a wire brush!
By the way, I am painting all my external engine parts a matt black high temp paint, and the block a greyish color also in high heat. It seems to be the general concensus that this grey color is the one to go for on my 23rd series standard eight. What are you going for? Probably the Packard green?

Barrie,

It seems a never ending chore this cleaning. The wire brush wheel on the bench grinder is getting overworked and is a great tool. I use it on just about anything that can be unbolted and hand held! And yes, the engine will be Packard green.

The Clipper is up at my mother's house where I store all my crap. (I didn't grab the throwout bearing when I was under there, it's still stuck to the throwout fork.) Well, where I am storing all the large crap that I can't keep down here. I have about 3 pickup loads of car parts that I plan on bringing down here eventually, but I'm afraid my garage isn't up to the capacity.

BTW, your blog and your spring problems is what made me remember the spring when I pulled out the trans in the Clipper. I totally forgot it was there, and was trying for about 10 minutes to get it to come back towards the rear when I remembered your blog!! Thanks!

By the way Eric, why is your car (Throwout bearing) so far away? Are you on holiday or something?

Thanks Eric, and thanks for the trouble with the spring! This helps me immensely, meaning that I can source this spring locally and not wait and pay for import. I knew that someone will eventually come back with an answer. As I am still learning "Packard" I hope I will also be able to help the newguys in future!

Regarding the spring clips, I thought as much, but wasn't certain. Now I know why the throwout fork was so loose. If anybody can help with an idea about how these springs look, even if it is a hand drawing (obviously you cant remove the clutch just to get a picture for me!) I don't seem to be able to find these clips on the plates, anybody know why?

What about keeping photos like the one Eric send somewhere for future reference?

The two holes on the flats on your throwout bearing are for spring clips to hold it to the throwout fork. If I had my throwout bearing with me I'd take a pic of it for you, but it's 130 miles away.

G'day Mal, I Googled the belville and it brought it up ok. I spelt it incorrectly but "Belleville washer", also known as a cupped spring washer is a type of non-flat washer. it has a conical shape which gives the washer spring tension. I used them in the aviation industry. I have also fitted some aviation industry ones to my 38 six and Eight. The site www.bellevillesprings.com has more detail. best Regards Peter

And Peter, thanks for your insight into the "Belleville washer", it is a bit different to most found on the car.
