Re: Radial tyre size

Hi PackarDan

Thanks for that link. I looked at their website and would have loved some wide whitewalls! Ja, but the prices! Will never be able to get that stuff shipped here!
I would surely like to know what will be the best as I am confused. It seems that the problem with the 48-50's is clearance in especially the rear wheel well. I do not want tires to rub the body at the back or in front when turning. As it is impossible for me to get bias ply tires I will have to go for radials although they might look a bit different/strange on the car. Some say they do drive nice but that slow speed manoevreubility is not good. Maybe someone else can chip in here as well? Do you think the 225's will be worth it? I hope the load rating is enough - 1874 pounds. Nobody has said anything about that yet - seeing that the Packard is such a heavy car? Any advise or opinion is appreciated in order to make an informed decision!

Got up very early today to be at the sand blaster at 8. It went fairly quickly and within an hour all 5 rims were finished. (Glad I am not a sand blaster by profession!)

Rushed back home in the vw kombi to catch the auto paint store still open. Bought 2K primer, hardener and 2K black finishing paint.

Cleaned out the rims with compressed air and wiped down with thinners. My first time spraypainting and I must say I was a bit nervous.

On the rims is the manufacturer: "Made in the USA by Motor Wheel" Always interesting to see things like that appear after who know how many years!

The primer went on easily enough and didnt look too bad. Then had to sand it down with 600 grit wet paper. This took ages. At long last could start with the black. This was not as easy as the primer and I have a few runs as well as some spots I missed. But dark caught up with me and I will have to look at the second coat tomorrow. Must say getting this 2K from my hands was quite a challenge!

Here is some pictures. The first is the raw rims fresh from the blaster - didnt realise the metal would be dull like that! The last picture is of the first coat - it was still a bit wet and I had to store it inside as we are expecting rain tonight.

OTGDY,
Thanks for the info on cleaning the gas tank. Let me know if you find the name of the chemical that you used.

Has anyone added an additional fuel filter in addition to their ceramic filter, so the car would now have two fuel filters?

My gas gauge is not working so I am guessing that my sending unit has been damaged so I am going to add the after market one that is posted on this website.

I am dropping the tank to day and I will post some pictures later.

The original tire size on a 1948-50 Eight was 7:60 x 15; this is not to be confused with a 7:00 x 15 which was based on an earlier sizing measurement system and is actually a slightly larger tire. Coker Tire's suggested replacement in radial for a 7:60 x 15 is 225/75R15. As already pointed out, there is not a lot of clearance in the rear fender wells, sometimes requiring folks to deflate their tires to get them on, and then inflate in place.

Owen:

All of the reference material I have seen, including the owner's manual for my '48 Packard Super 8 specify a 7.00 x 15 bias ply tire size (6 ply for my LWB). What reference are you using to indicate the 7:60 x 15 size?

Has there been much discussion on this site regarding the pros & cons of switching over from bias plys to radials? I understand that manuveurability at higher speeds may improve but steering out a parking spot may be next to impossible with radials?

africapackard:

In response to a recent request to Coker tires to tell me what size radial should replace a 7.00 x 15 bias ply tire (the size originally specified for my 1948 LWB sedan), I received the following e-mail response:

" Thank you for your recent inquiry into Coker Tire. The tire size you would need is a 235/75R15. I have attached a link to our website so that you can see them. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me.

store.coker.com/search.php?mode=search&b ... y_fulldescr=Y&substring=235%2F75R15

Thanks,

Jerry Preisel "

If you visit the linked site, you will see that Coker is one of the few tire manfacturers that makes wide white wall radials that look pretty good on vintage cars, although, you will also see that they can be a bit spendy.

Packard V-8, The silo at Alycekay is gone. What corner was the Siler market on? There is a huge strip mall on the NW corner, could have been there?

The building that used to be the airport is now an auto body shop--my father had a work friend who liked to fly and Dad remembers a couple of sunday excursions out of that little airport, before I was born.

Our house is right on Farmington road, we are considered part of the Kendallwood sub, our house is one of the few on Farmington that matches the sub homes architecturally.

Saturday 19th April 2008

Arrived at the workshop this morning to find Wade already there, although I thought he was getting back next week. Turns out, and it was my misunderstanding, that next week Wade and Gina are going in the '37 Super 8 to the Ballarat rally. They are leaving on Wednesday morning to be at the start of the rally on Saturday with Ballarat being 975 kilometers, about 575 miles south of Sydney.

In preparation for this Wade had the Super 8 up on Rick's hoist to service it. However after he drained the oil, when he took the cover off to remove and clean the oil pickup screen a nut and a washer came out as well as the screen! Needless to say this caused much consternation and resulted in Wade taking off the sump to check out the situation. Wade's guess was that a nut holding the oil piping in the sump had come loose, but this wasn't so. Couldn't find where it may have come from, even checked Kevin's engine on the bench to give other angles to look from for possible causes. Wade came to the conclusion that somebody may have dropped them down the oil filler tube at some stage in the car's past. With having to take off the engine splash shields to access the sump, Wade took the opportunity to clean both these and the sump in the parts washing machine, and is going to repaint the splash shields while they are out. Talking to Wade a few weeks ago, he was saying that since he brought in the Super 8 from the US last September he's put about 5000 miles on it. And thinks the nut and washer have been there at least since then!

Meanwhile back at the '41, not a great deal happened. Did some more wire brushing of small components then Marine Cleaned and Metal Readied the rear bumper splash shield and some of the cleaned pieces. Looks like I'll have another 2 & 1/2 weeks to get all the cleaning and painting finished including the cowl vent and underneath the dash. Then on Wade's return from Ballarat it should only be re-assembly work required.

Well I said I would be getting back to Detroit soon, and I didnt lie. I just found out I have to fly back to detroit for a meeting at 10am on Monday morning on the way to Toronto. I guess we made the next cut in the vendor selection process.

If we get this deal, I would imagine myself coming to Detroit alot.

Small world eh??? Look at the North East corner of Orchard Lake and 12 mile. 2nd street east of orchard lake is AlyceKay. A short dead end street about half way up Alyce Kay is Patrica (the spelling IS correct no "i" after the "c"). I lived on Patrica for 10 years. It is about half way between the proving grounds at milford and the Tec-Center.

Mr PB. Is that Kensington Subdivision u're in????? Is Siler market still there at 12 and Orchard Lake?? The ACE hardware about half way between 12 and 13 was an airport back in the 40's and early 50's.

Is the Corn Silo still there at the corner of Alyce Kay and 12 mile???
