Re: 1950 Packard (New owner) (can't keep engine running)

Hi 50 Pack

Welcome! I am also the owner of 1950 standard 8, but with 3speed on the tree. A wonderfull car. I think the advise you got already should be very helpfull. Mine works fine but I converted to 12v negative ground and installed a 12v fuel pump. I do however have issues starting after it has sat for a week. Have to use the choke. Hope you come right and keep at it.

Turbopackman, I can also get that measurements for you if I remember! The engine bay is quite narrow and gets narrower to the front. Length should not be a problem.

One of the simpler pleasures I enjoy is leaving the cruise at night's end and having to blink parking lights to make strollers aware I am behind them. I never turn on the headlights till I clear the parking area, and I hate to blow the horn. While all the Chebbies and Fords are making noise and revving their engines, I just sort of drift out of my spot and roll softly to the exit. I have heard comments about the quietness and smooth exit as I leave. "Is that thing running?" "Yeah, it never makes a sound."

Mr PB. Thank you for the answer and analysis. And yes i'll heed your warnings. The only reason i want to set up the 2-button connexion is for energency use in case i get caught out a long way from home under adverse conditions.

I've been also studying the Reversing Relay. That's what it's called on my wiring diagram. It's the relay with the 6 terminals and the ressitor on the bottom. I'll have to look at it closer but it appears to me that the reversing relay could be replaced with two starter relays with a resistor between them. Need to know what kind of resistor to get.

The reason i'me getting into all of this now is because i relocated the Reversing Relay to a more convenient point than way down on the side of the fender well. I never liked it there. Now i have it up high and nearly at presentation level. This process follows an unrelated maintenance i did to the car. REAL EZ to work on if needed. I'll post a pic in a few days.

My apologies everyone for starting it out under the a TL thread. I'm not sure why i did that. I think it's because i was working on the inner fender well with the PB wiring and relays and just got confused when i saw the TL title with inner fender well as part of the title.

OR maybe Alzhiemers is setting in on me or something.

Ok MENTAL NOTE TO MYSELF....never use the split thread option again. Boy did that cause issues in the database.

I think the Split Thread option used to be called the "Weed Wacker" option.

What was the original gasket made from????? I'm guessing cork.

The gasket I pulled off of it was rubber, but it was badly damaged and the holes didn't line up properly with the mounting points.

Be carful when makeing an changes to instrumwent cluster.

I don't plan on getting into the gauge cluster at all. I don't want to risk any damage.

Quote:

The old classic gasket material for gasoline service was of course cork coated with shellac, but ethanol is a solvent for shellac so that's no longer a good choice.

Good to know. I plan to run non-ethanol fuel as I can still get it locally here, but there are the times when it's unavoidable to buy the corn-gas. Especially here in MN where our "all knowing" government is increasing to a 20% minimum state wide.

Still kinda curious about the Chevy sender because 31 ohm spread sounds low and that sender may not be any good.

I looked it up on the manufacturer's website www.spectrapremium.com and the sending unit is 0-35 ohm according to the spec sheets. I'm not sure if getting 31-32 ohms on my multimeter means that this one is going bad or if it's ok. I'm thinking that I'll stick with this one for now and try the in-line resistor as HH56 has suggested. If it isn't satisfactory with the resistor, then maybe I'll try to graft on the universal sender from JC Whitney.

Quote:
If the gauage is reading backwards then what about bending the float ARM in the opposite direction????

To get it to work I'd have to remove the sender and re-mount it upside down. If I go that far, I'll just try the previously mentioned universal sender for the correct Ohm range.

Mr.Pushbutton
It should be, we are now talking about pushbuttons. That's how it works, you start working on T-L and end up on pushbuttons!

From Mr PB

"OK--here is the scoop: connecting both the Gray and red wires to ground causes clockwise rotation of the motor, which causes the sector gear to travel clockwise, toward the "park" position. Connecting the Brown and red wires to ground causes counterclockwise rotation, whcih causes the sector gear to travel counterclockwise, toward the "reverse" position.
All of
the above provisos and warnings still apply.
"
