It sounds like you checked the governor insted of the solenoid as it has no gear.
The noise in your speedo could be gunk in the speedo at the dash or your sun gear may be shot. [pain in the butt]

Arrived at Hershey this AM at 08:30. Saw Dave Czirr around 9:30 and met Ole Book (nice gent) who had some interesting pix of his Carib restoration and some russian packards (note that I used a small p). Also a comment was made that the N Korean leader, Hu Givz AF, showed up at a meeting in one of those russian look-alikes. Mr PB hollered my name and came over in the rain to shake my paw. I learn something every time I talk to a V8 owner. Between Dave, Ole and Mr PB, my knowledge has inched forward. Dave Czirr gave me a road draft tube clamp as it was missing on the Carib. Thanks Dave. Wandered over to the Chocolate field and saw Rich Sycks and father-in-law Art. My tinted windows didn't show up from Florida so I will have to wait till he ships them. Hershey is still one hell of a car venue.
Learned a train collector friend from Chicago also has a 1907 Packard and a 1909 Packard - both running. He also owns a Duesenberg J but since it isn't an SJ, I probably shouldn't mention it.
Rained heavily but since some folks say I'm all wet anyway the water didn't bother me.
Back home at 7:30 PM

Hello this is Bill Again. Thanks' everyone for the past replies.I am still trying to get the areo-drive operable on the ?41? 120. I have removed the solenoid and checked the points for any noticeable problems,
None were found., in fact the gear and points looked surprisingly clean with no burnt contacts.

I have changed the oil (twice) on the areo-drive unit with SAE 85-140. I took the car for a spin and the unit worked flawless, shifted into over drive in second and third with the over drive Came home from the short outing , picked up the wife and we went for a celebration drive. About a mile from the house, the car kicked out of overdrive and would not stay engaged. Something I didn't mention in the previous post is that the Speedo makes intermittent noises coming from the instrument panel. I have noticed that when the Areo drive works well is when the Speedo is making the worst noise. I know that according to the book the solenoid is driven from the Speedo gear.

Could this be my problem? I am not sure how a dry Speedo cable could affect the over-drive.

I will try and lube the cable and see if anything becomes of that. Pardon me for my ignorance, It seems working on Packard's is a far cry from Building houses. Thanks Bill

On top of the vacuum booster there is a VENT with some felt like packing in it as a filter. If the vent becomes plugged then the pedal will not release because the vacuum piston can not return. Also, INSIDEof the booster is a vacuum hose. If it gets kinked or is not installed right then that could cause the problem too.

Sorry, I was not clear in that I only have to bleed any one of the four wheel cylinders to relieve the pressure. I inserted a tell-tale light under the dash which glows whenever I pressurise the brake system. It normally goes out immediately I release the brake pedal, but lately it has remained on after about 5-10 applications, this is accompanied by a loss of pedal travel as the system does not release. The brakes do not release themselves within a half-hour (the longest that I have left the pressurised situation). It also makes no difference if the vacuum system is operating or not. I am very interested to find out the cause. I have lots of spares so I shall start the replacement program as soon as I get some time.

"Because it occurs at all wheel cylinders I have determined that it is in the Boost Cylinder. I shall remove it and replace the residual check valve with a NOS ..."

I assume that means that u have to pop ALL FOUR wheel cylinder bleeders to geta release????? If so then u must have BRAKE HOSE problems. With good hoses then popping ANY ONE, EXACTLY ONE, and ONLY ONE bleeder should release ALL of the rest of the cylinders.

I don't care if the hoses are new. Either the hoses are bad or the brakes lines are plugged up. Problem, as u describe is NOT in the master cylinder not the power booster.
