Re: Considering a 110/120

Let me join in recommending the 120.

I have owned a 1939 120 sedan with overdrive for 45 years that I have driven thousands of miles without any major trouble. I have driven it to both coasts from Colorado and it has never been on a trailer or hooked to a tow truck.

The 39 120 has that pre-war look with the running boards, balloon fenders and individual headlights, yet mechanically is a very modern car for its time. The 282 is a simple bullet proof engine that has adequate power and the transmission is smooth and easy to shift. The column shifter works fine as long as you perform regular maintenance. My overdrive works flawlessly and I regularly drive 75mph (maybe a little more!) on the freeway. It has an independent front suspension that makes it handle very well. And that giant back seat! My grand-daughter says she feels like a princess sitting back there.

The 38-42 120's were 6" longer than the earlier 120's which may not be important to you but I an 6'4 and need the extra leg room.

I agree with the other posters that you should not see a leak at the cap. The only reason I can think of for this might be pressure build-up in the tranny because the vent is plugged. Check the vent on top of the transmission and make sure it is not plugged. You access the vent from inside the car, under the carpet on the transmission "hump", there is a small plate that can be removed. The whole vent unit can be removed with a 1-1/4" socket.

The 39 Coupe in West Covina looks like a very decent car. I think I see a overdrive lockout button under the dash, so that would be a definite plus. That paint is really red! Packard offered a red in 38 but not in 39. Closest they had in 39 was two choices of maroon.

The 54 convertible from Alabama has a front clip that doesn't match the rest of the car. Wonder if it was in an accident at some point. It doesn't appear to have a windshield. They don't say whether all the trim is included.
Price is high considering that everything on this car needs to be redone.

To flush the system, put all the windows down. Put new fluid in the reservoir and disconnect the return line (hydraulic hose toward engine) Run the system one component after another. Collect the fluid from the return line and discard. The windows don't need to be run up completely. The top needs to go through a full cycle up and down. Check the fluid level during these operations and refill as needed.
I use a regular hydraulic fluid in mine, but ATF is good too.

Attached is a picture of the hydraulic pump unit. The bottom silver can is the fluid reservoir. Remove it to check the level.
If your pump is not working, the Hydro-electric company is still in business and can rebuild them.

Re: Air Filter

Oil bath cleaners seem like they are free flowing but in order to work properly, they first restrict the air flow to increase it's velocity. Then the fast moving airflow is forced into a 180 degree turn. The dirt particles in the air are heavier and their momentum carries them straight into the oil where they are trapped. The air then passes through a coarse and not very effective filter medium and goes into the carburetor. The weakness of oil bath filters is in filtering out fine material.
While the paper filter impedes air flow to some degree, the path followed by the air is straighter and less restricted and the paper filter is a much better filter. The result is less dirt and engine wear.
