Agreed, I thought as much. Evidently he was claiming to have read it in an article by Menno Duerksen (sp?) in "Cars & Parts" years ago. I kind of doubt a well known writer would make just make up or state such a thing without evidence so suspect the current pusher of this "info" has had a memory lapse or? who knows? He's also claiming some truth to the old Packard-ZIL/ZIS canard so the facts are evidently "alternative" ones in his case lol.

Packard V8s in Rolls Royce?

A guy on another website is promulgating the idea that Packard V8s were used in Rolls Royce cars. I've never heard of this. Wiki says not so, and given Rolls extensive auto and aero engine experience it seems quite unlikely, though the general architecture of US V8s was no doubt studied. Was this a rumor at the time?

The parts are in the big high-rise 5 story (?) brick building downtown. The 1st floor had many whole cars also, at least when we were there, so wonder if they are gone now or will be in the 2nd auction. The couple of floors above were jammed with probably thousands of parts, many still in boxes from the sellers, plus bumpers, exhausts, and other big parts. I recall some boxes from Kanter's of course. One helpful thing is there is an elevator so at least things won't need to be dragged down the stairs. It should be interesting to see what comes to light!

As I also had interest in '30s and '40s Cads (was once a member of Cad/LaSalle club and CCC and owned a '47 60-S) I did also wish to look at what I recollect was a '46 or '47 model 61 (fastback) sedan, one car I'd still like to own. I can't recall now if there actually was one, but even if so, most of the cars there would not be movable without moving all the cars in front of it. Frankly the experience was so overwhelming it's hard to recollect all that we saw that day. The abiding memory I still take away was the kindness of Mr. Abelove to spend time with us, with his no doubt busy schedule (it was a weekday), and I do recall him saying that it was a pleasure to do be able to get away a bit from his usual routine.

The downtown high-rise building had it's 1st floor jammed with cars mostly, and a huge pile of wheel covers and hubcaps, as well as other stuff. The couple of floors above were filled of boxes and loose parts, I beleive the topmost floor was empty. I think that building was where I had seen a '55 Olds convert, but iirc the one that I saw was a Starfire, not the 88 listed. Perhaps that building will be auctioned later. I wish it had been 10 years ago, as I'd had '56 and '57 S-88 converts, but never a '55 and never a 98 Starfire convert of any year. It's too late for me now for any more complete restorations, as most of these cars will certainly require. BTW there was some small % of cars that were restored or nice original drivers, most of which don't appear to be found in this batch.

As to Lou Abelove, I know him, a very nice fellow and real car nut with very eclectic tastes. Pierce Arrows to Miatas. I met him about 10 or 12 years ago, he had interest in Franklins, I knew of a local '25 Franklin for sale, and I was interested in a 46'47 Super Clipper at the time and he has a ton of Packards as you can see. This sale will certainly flood the Packard project car market. He's actually been on here a few times I think, but I forget the name he used, I may have initially responded to a post that he made.

Utica is about 1 hr 45 min from me. Lou is/was an attorney and the Chief Counsel for Price Chopper grocery stores, a major Northeast grocery chain of about 200 stores. I met him at his office, with my car-loving 27 yr old son in tow, and he very kindly spent several hours with us, showing us his entire collection, housed in his huge turn of the century NY Mills warehouse, where most of the cars are, and a 5 story building in downtown Utica, the upper floors being absolutely stuffed full of probably thousands of parts most still in their unopened box from their eBay sellers. I see no mention in the auction of the huge parts lot. Much was NOS or new repro I believe. The biggest problem with selling the cars over the years is getting to them, as they are stuffed in very tightly and one would have to move them sequentially, as is being done here by the auctioneer.

The most interesting part is the genesis of this collection. He told me that years ago he had brought home his first vintage car, a '55? Cad I think it was, and his wife went absolutely beserk, and she forced him to eventually sell the car. So he decided then and there to collect cars surreptitiously. He had or bought the warehouses and proceeded to fill them up with cars and parts over the next years, in amazing quantities. He told us that he mainly wanted to preserve them from destruction, and realized that 80% of them were junkers or parts cars. I'd say that he succeeded admirably. He also mentioned that incredibly his wife still had no idea of any of it! He knew at the time, being by then in his 70s, that he had to do something with it all but he didn't have a clue what to do as he was concerned about his wife's reaction. His son did know about it, I believe that he's still a DA in another area of NY and may well be handling the auction.

So I'd be most curious to know what has finally sparked this auction. I don't know if Lou passed away or perhaps just decided it was finally time, come what may. He's a very nice guy and as I said true car nut in the best sense. I hope he's still around to realize some fruits of his prescience in saving these great cars. As you can see, besides Packards, he particularly loves Pierce, Cads, Imperials, Oldsmobiles and Brit sports cars. I for one Would love to be able to bid and win a white & blue '55 Olds convert that he had when we were there, but I'm afraid that at my age the collecting and restoring ship has sailed for good.

This looks like it could be at Ed Lucke's former yard, he died a few years ago and had a bunch of Packards, they were his favorite. His 1st yard in MD was bought by the county for a new road and he moved the entire inventory up over the MD-PA line, just S of Spring Grove PA. Last time I was there was in the mid 90s.
