The starter I have was kindly provided by @flackmaster, so would have to look again to see. Duly noted on the voltage, I'll need to find a 6v battery. Will compare the ring gear to mounting flange depths to see if they're the same. I didn't know if the pinion size/tooth count was different, I would assume from the previous posts they're not? Would save me needing to find another starter.

So, will the starter from a 356 - autolite max 4052, work on the 288/327/359 series engines?
It appears to drop in, but don't want to try blindly and grind the pinion and and ring gear if wrong.

Yeah, that tool looks great, but won't help here as the stuckest valves are completely shut, so there's no way to get under them. No budging even with a *little* bit of leverage, and a lot of heat and sauce.

So I need any and all suggestions on how to free stuck valves. Currently the motor has about half stuck, however the real problem is with the rear two intakes. I've tried every combination of wedges, prybars, heat and hammers I can come up with, and it won't budge. No wonder the cam sprocket broke on no. 8 intake. I've got the manifolds off, and soaked the valve stem above the guide, roasted the valve guides with a propane torch, tapped everything lightly trying to shock it loose, and just about put my weight on a 4 ft prybar underneath the end of the valve stem, with no success. I've never seen nor heard of valves stuck this hard, and the internet isn't offering anything useful. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sent a PM earlier, not sure if it went through. Still new to the whole forum thing.

That was my first thought, but all the breaks looked clean and new, didn't see any signs of previous damage. It did snap pretty cleanly off the sharp inside corner of the keyway, but couldn't say it was a preexisting flaw.

To be fair, I'm still shocked the gear shattered like that, I would have expected the key to shear long before that gear would break. That's usually one of the points of having a key, a mechanical fuse.

starter that caused all these problems

The rule of thumb is to NEVER power crank an unknown engine! Always hand-turn it a few times and even then do so only after checking the pan and putting oil in all the cylinders. You’ve been given great advice here but you chose to ignore most of it so the starter did not break the gear, you did. You’ll get the same advice on Facebook so it’s not clear what was expected when you posted the problem there too.

Lol I was saying that tounge in cheek. Again, I had no reason to believe that anything was stuck, and had no way to turn it over completely by hand ahead of time. Also never heard of breaking a timing set like that, everything seemed fine on inspection.

As above, just old oil varnish keeping it in, had to get a pipe wrench to add just that little bit of extra twist past what my hands could achieve. Definitely not the problem there, spins freely, and even had a bit of oil still in it. Definitely just a whole bunch of stuck valves. I've been able to coerce them into letting the cam rotate a bit more, but the intake on cyl 8 is stuck very hard, closed too. Seems to be the biggest problem there.
