Fuel pump by pass
#1
Home away from home

I added an electric fuel pump to aid in cold starts.
Now my machanical pump is leaking and it may take awhile to get a replacement (on back order at Max M)

Would there be a problem to just by pass the mechanical pump and use the electric one?

I was not planning on removing the original pump, just connecting the input and output hoses together and using the electric pump.

Would I need to seal the openings in the mechanical pump?
Would this work until a get a new pump, or it make more problems I’m not thinking of?
I understand the old pump would still be working, but running dry.
Thanks in advance

FYI : the car has been a little hard to start cold, but once it is running and before it starts to hestitate and backfire, it has never ran better! Smooth, quiet, good acceleration, just like a Packard should be.

Hesitation and back fire

I recently added an electric fuel pump just for cold starts. The Packard gurus said to add a check valve which I bought but never installed. This would avoid drawing the fuel through the electric pump when it was off. The pump is exactly what the gurus recommended, Airtex, 6 volts, etc..

When I run the car at freeway speeds (50-55) after about a half hour of travel, the car starts to hesitate and back fire. When I turn on the electric pump, it smooths out. I’m not sure if this happens in regard to speed or the time the engine is running.

When I came home Saturday, I had the electric pump running and it was leaking gas from the mechanical pump. I checked it running with the electric pump on and with the engine off and gas was coming from the mechanical pump.

Do I need to replace the mechanical pump?
Would adding the check valve help?
Is something wrong with the electric pump?
The electric pump did not seem to help much with cold starts.

Any ideas on what to do next?
Thanks in advance, you people are the best!

Exhaust flange nuts

I had my exhaust manifold replaced last fall. After a short time the exhaust flange nuts came loose. I went to a muffler shop and after getting a better gasket from Olson’s they were able to get it tight.

Now it has loosened again after a few short drives.
It makes the engine very noisy.

They’re there a special washer to help this.?

I understand that Loctite won’t work because of the extreme heat.

Thanks for all of your help and advice.
As the British say, I think I have it all sorted out now.

By the way, Airtex call s for a 3 amp fuse, not 10.

So, another trip to Auto Zone!

I have a blade style fuse wired into the supply wire.
I am going to attach it to the end of the negative battery cable at the starter for the installation.
Before I install the pump, I’m going to test the pump from the battery using the fused line so that if I’m backwards, it will only blow the fuse and not burn up the pump.
The fuse is 10 amp, what Airtex recommends.

Does this sound okay?

I am installing an electric pump on my 49 just to help with cold starts.

Car is positive ground, RED wire to ground or
BLACK wire to ground?

Thanks for all of your comments. You members are the best!

I took the car to a local muffler shop and the bolt on one side of the exhaust/manifold connection had flown off. They were able to align the flange but could not get it tight enough. It looked like the original gasket.

I ordered a new gasket from Olson’s and it came in 2 days. Great service!

I returned to the muffler shop this morning and they were able to install the new exhaust flange gasket without any cutting. The gasket looks like a big o-ring and Olson ‘ said in was like the NOS one.

The car now much quieter and running better, I think.
I’m going to try the vacuum gauge again later.
Thanks, again for your help.

Th is is a photo of the connection from my manifold to the exhaust pipe. I recently had the manifold replaced as it was leaking. It seems that the gasket in between is not tight.

Would this cause the engine to be just noisy or could it cause poor performance. ( It seems to lack power)

Before the manifold was replaced the engine had a tune up with all new parts and ignition wires were replaced.
