Thanks for the suggestion about the 1931 manual. Odd that the 1932 manual says nothing about carburetor adjustment. The carburetor is the same, for all practical purposes.

Also odd that the 1931 manual says nothing about how to adjust that "kicker screw" or even what it does. In fact, the 1931 manual doesn't even label the kicker screw on the drawing !

Adjusting an updraft Detroit Lubricator
#12

I'm trying to adjust a Detroit Lubricator Model 51 udraft carburetor on my '32 902.

The carburetor seems to work OK but when cruising at no-load like on a fairly straight road at constant speed, the engine seems to miss or hesitate. Maybe it's not quite 100% at other conditions but it's noticeable at this no-load. The carburetor is a new repro made by David Frear.

There is a mixture t-handle adjustment screw under the throat. Does that adjust idle or high speed? How should I adjust that?

And there's two screws on the throttle for the butterfly. I'll try to post a photo. One bigger screw seems to be the stop for idle speed. But there's a smaller screw next to it that's called a "kicker screw". I don't know what that means or what that does. It has a needle-like end and is supposed to be adjusted 7-15 thou from being flush with the pump body. Again, I don't know what that means. How do I adjust that?

Could someone give me a step-by-step procedure for adjusting a DL Model 51?

Thanks --- Scott

Looking for high speed gears

I'd like to find a set of Phil Bray's high speed ring and pinion gears which would fit a standard eight, 1932. Specifically a 1932 902.

That or any used, older ring and pinion gear set that would fit the '32 but have a lower ratio (higher speed) than 4.69. I'd be interested in the gears, the differential or an entire rear axle.

Thanks --

Two piece driveshaft rebuilding

My 1932 902 has a two piece driveshaft.

Does anyone have any experience rebuilding the center carrier or know of someone who has and can do the job?

The bearings seem worn with plenty of slop, but more importantly the rubber vibration insulating section is all boogered up from age. I don't see how to replace that. The driveshaft runs OK, but there is vibration presumably coming from that center carrier.

Valve clearances DECREASE when engine cold?
#15

Maybe I'm just not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I always believed that as the engine gets hot , valve clearances will decrease.

I just set the valves on my 32 902 to 0.004 with the engine good and hot after a long run. This morning before putting the valve cover back and the engine stone cold thought I'd see what the clearances were when cold. The intakes had essentially zero clearance and the exhausts were only 0.001 or 0.002. So all clearances got smaller as the engine cooled.

Is that supposed to happen? If so then why don't we set vdlves when the engine is cold? I'm now inclined to set valves to 0.004. when cold.

What do you think?

I'd still like to find the air cleaner, though. I doubt that anyone is making them. .... Are they?

Thanks and Yes, we've discussed this on the AACA forum but I just wanted to toss out the thought that I'm looking. . . . see if anyone on this forum might have or know of anything.

I'll most likely call regarding the new one.

Thanks -- Scott

As it says, I'd like to find the proper Detroit Lubricator carburetor for my 1932 902 --- Standard Eight.

Anybody have one out there?

Also looking for the air cleaner --- the curved pipe and head as shown in the photo.

Thanks -- Scott

Yellow Metal in a transmission or differential
#19

I have a 1932 902 standard eight.

Is there yellow metal in the transmission or differential?

Brass and bronze are not compatible with gear oils rated GL-5 due to the high sulpher content, so I understand. But I don't know what's inside a Packard transmission or rear end of this vintage. Can I use a modern GL-5 or should I look for a GL-4 or other low-tech gear oil?

Thanks -- Scott

Overdrive on a 1932

Does anyone have experience installing an overdrive on a 1932 902 Packard?

On this series, there is already a two piece driveshaft so it seems that putting an overdrive in the front portion is a natural. If something fits.

Just curious if someone has looked into this already and can share what brand works and how it was done.

Thanks --Scott
