54 Packard 327. 2 barrel carb wgd-2102s. rebuild

Hey guys. I got fire and I have fuel going into the carb, but only runs if I mist gas into the carburetor. Gas leaks from all the gaskets, pretty dangerous. So time to rebuild the original carb for its first time ever. I took the top part off the float bowl and it was pretty gross, the screen filter was clogged up sever. Two new inline filters, a new pump and running from fresh gas in a gas can, so it has to be the carburetor, right? Yes, I made sure all connections were tight. My question is, how hard is it to rebuild this carburetor with a new kit? Any words of wisdom? I have rebuilt others before with great results.

Well, like I said, the mechanic down the road isn't much of a mechanic I'm affraid. When he checked compression,he had me crank the motor while he put his thumb over the spark plug holes, and said all was fine. I thought there was more involved , which is why I was asking.

Can I take the side cover off and check the valves better that way? How can I make the valves move to check them? I ask because I dont think my mechanic friend is much of a mechanic.

Yes. It has good compression. When I got the car it ran. I drove it around the block. It ran rough, figured it needed a tune up and good cleaning. I put fresh gas in the tank and made it 3 miles before the pump went out. Got it home and pump was full of crud, so was the carb. I replaced the pump and partially cleaned out the carb, not a full disassymbly. I have a line going from a gas can with an inline filter going to the pump now, just to get it running. Its getting gas to the carb. Someone told me to check the filter screen in the carb and told me where it was. I did and it was blocked with crud and "clay" . If I mist gas into the carb while cranking it tries to start. I should replace the carb or rebuild it. But how do I clean or check valves if they are gunked up?

No brass tag, just what is on bowl assy. Wires are carbon core. Using in line filter and fresh gas ran into gas can going to the pump. Still have to clean the tank out.

I have a carter 118-68 carburetor on my 54 clipper with a 327 engine. Is it a two barrel? Looks like it. All the local parts stores say it suppose to be a 4 barrel. Where is the best and cheapest place to get a rebuild kit?

New coil, 6 volt. Polarity is correct. Not sure what brand of wires we put on. Set the timing today. Every plug is getting good fire now. Fuel pump is pumping to the carb. Checked the screen filter in carb and it was beyond corroded and coverd in what looks like clay. So now I am gonna rebuild the carb. If I put in a little gas down the carburetor it trys to start, pops and sputters and almost starts. So everything else has been replaced, now got to redo the carb and things should work. What do you guts think?
