1949 Station Wagon VIN ID #
#11
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

auto.nut
I have a 1949 Station Wagon that I have owned for about 30 years and did not get around to restoring it. But now I cannot find the title. The state of WA only keeps title info for 5 or 7 years and then they delete it from their records. Ya that's really nice isn't it.
Anyway I lost the title, & could not find a VIN number and could only find a number on the cowl which is 805810. What kind of ID# is that? I gave them that number and they could not find it anywhere in their records. Thus they say I have to trailer the auto to the WA State Patrol, have to make an appointment and pay $65 etc and then wait three years to get a valid title. The only thing they do is to verify the VIN# I believe. If they cannot find one, then what? Now does that make any sense? I am a 91 year old person and have paid state licenses and other stuff for 66 years and this is how they treat you. Why do they purge their records after 5 years? My question is which ID number would the state of WA use to identify the automobile?? When I gave them the 805810 number that was perhaps the wrong number. But if not available anywhere in there records anymore it wouldn't make any difference if I had the correct number anyway.
Any help would be appreciated. Lee

MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP REPAIR
#12
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

auto.nut
The fuel pump gave up on my '48 Packard and in taking it apart I see where the diaphragm has a crack in it etc. But I am concerned in replacing the diaphragm with an older type replacement which will deteriorate with our stupid alcohol fuel.
I don't know why they don't get rid of it, because it is nothing but problems.
Are there any replacement diaphragms or diaphragm material that one could make one out of, that will work with this damn alcohol fuel??? This alcohol fuel is very destructive to our older vehicles. I don't know why there is not more of a backlash against this fuel. You can't leave it in any engine for any length of time and if you do, you will have costly repairs. Not true with our previous non-alcohol fuel.

No reply on the Headlight & Inst Panel screw-in bezels that hold the switches to the instrument panel. Are there none out there?

Does anyone know of anyone having any decent headlight or instrument light bezels that hold them in place? Mine are all messed up by a previous owner or owners and really need to find some better ones. Mine are separating(outside from the inside) because the trim has all broken loose and separated.
Still working on the short I have. Everything points to the speedometer pointer light. Sure hate this kind of troubleshooting!!!!

Tracing out a wiring short on my Instrument Lamp Switch.
I am wondering if someone can tell me where the "reading lamp: is located.

HOWARD surely someone must have a better wiring diagram than the A.E.A. one shown. As you say the quality is so bad that the diagram is almost unusable. Do you have any idea of where I might be able to download a better quality drawing?? Sure could use it. Lee
Have ordered some LED lights to replace the rear turn signals etc. I will let you know how things turn out. Still have a short in the INST PNL SWITCH CIRCUIT, but will work on that after I get the turn signals to work properly.

Or maybe I was wrong, wires #17 is perhaps the wires that are for front lighting on the first notch of the lighting switch. And if that is true, why don't I see wires #17 going to the back running lights? The back running lights should be lit when on the first notch of the light switch. The manual even states that. Is there another different power feed from the light switch with a different number? There is a Wire 9A. Sure wish they had a description somewhere to indicate what the wire number's function is.

Howard I really appreciate you trying to help me. I am completely lost right now and sure could use your help. Not only am I not getting full voltage to me turn signals, but I find out that I am not getting any voltage to my rear running or park lights. The front parking lights are working fine. On the diagram if I go to where the interconnections are just past the front fender under the car on the inside chassis rail, I am not getting any voltage there!!! I should be getting voltage on the first notch of the headlight switch. But if I look at the diagram wire 45D & 45C go to the front park lights. There are wires numbered 45B & 45C that I would think would be for the rear lights. But I do not get any voltage there at all. But what gets me about the diagram, is where are these wires connected to the Lighting Switch? They are not shown or they switch to different numbers which makes tracing impossible. Help!!

The 1942 wiring diagram is a mess. It shows a flasher all right but is not showing it correctly. If you look at it, both indicator lights R&L are connected to the same terminal. Now you know this cant be right or maybe I do not understand the circuit. Certainly not what I have or had originally.
My flasher unit is getting it's voltage from the same circuit as the heater ckt. But I can't even find the heater on the diagram!!! I am wondering if I should wire the flasher to a little different source.
Did Packard ever show the heater wiring anywhere in '42?

My auto is a model 2055 & was called an invalid sedan. Because of the war this car was thrown together and is not standard. It does not have the regular 1942 tail-light. It has the long slender type that were from a '41 or earlier Packard and has only one two element bulb in it. The car did not have a steering wheel turn signal when I got it. Could not find an original but got one that was similar and installed it several years ago. It did have a two terminal flasher unit wired into the car however but no turn signal. I left that as it was and as you say about the brake signal. I installed two diodes that would lite the two rear turn-signal lamps together but would be out of the circuit when the turn signal was on. Yes I have a mess on my hands and with all the original old wiring I hate to get too involved. But it did work once thus can't give up.
