Adjusted for inflation $36.00 in the mid 20's would be around $600 today.

A few more pedal cars and Blue Streak ads.

RUTH NICHOLS SETS NEW ALTITUDE RECORD

Ruth Nichols’ flight in a Lockheed monoplane powered with a 225 horsepower Packard Diesel motor to an altitude of 21,350 feet Friday had been credited to the Rye girl unofficially as a new altitude record for Diesel engines. A sealed barograph, removed from the plane, has been sent to Washington to the Bureau of Standards to determine the exact altitude figure.

Some of the 30-32 OEM Std 8 covers Ive seen don't have this cork insert.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/153472733007

Could this have been an aftermarket item?

I'd agree it was for noise reduction.

Some modern diesels use foam inserts to deaden noise.

You'll notice this isn't specifically for the 9th series eights, but I've used it as a general guide.

Marty,
Here's some detailed info on how to adjust the steering box. Drag links should also be checked to make sure the slotted plugs are screwed in enough so the springs are compressed enough to prevent excessive play. I've used GL-4/5/6 85-140W with no problems. With proper adjustment on good gears I have about 1/2 to 5/8" play at the outer edge of the steering wheel.

All - 2023 update
The acetylene tetra bromide sample I dyed with Sudan #2 dye lasted for about 2 years before finally turning a light amber.

I've been researching other heavy liquids (the density has to be around 2.85 to 2.96 g/ml) for the gauge to read accurately.

So far I haven't run across one that is the right density and as stable as the original fluid used. The attached .pdf lists some of the fluids I've looked at.
