Hi-
The website changes allowed me to update the picture of my car in the owner registry.
Thanks.
However several lines of 'trash' have appeared in the description and history.

Bill, if the choke thermostat on your S-8 is is located in the same place on your exhaust manifold, I can remove my (39 Super Eight) choke actuating link and measure/ photograph it.

It should present no problem to manufacture one.

I don't know what the clips that retain the thermostat-to-choke link rod are called but I've seen them on other carb and choke linkages on other cars besides prewar Packards.

BillinNC, If you want to PM your e-mail address to me I can get pictures of the linkage and installation tomorrow.

I have been unable to post any pics on this site for quite a while, but I can e-mail them.

The link to straight-eight.com shows the pump check valve for the EE23 I have been looking for. I just ordered it from them, thanks Fish'n Jim.

Nice.
Heres a YT link with some more detail.

Hope the link works.

Most of the drama usually associated with YT is absent.

Glad they saved the car.

As far as I know the FWD Packard prototype is with the Bob Bahre collection in Paris Hill, Maine.

Until 2020 the collection was opened to the public once a year. I haven't heard what any future plans are for the collection since Mr. Bahre's passing.

I'd second everything above.

If you still have those drips after a few hundred miles, you may want to address them.

I'm resisting the urge to say 'They all do that'.

If you are new to the hobby, welcome.

At risk of stating the obvious, driving our older cars is a different experience from our daily drivers, you will need to develop a sense of feel and even smell that the modern cars don't require. The fact you got under the car to get the pictures of your various seepages tells me you are on the way to the necessary sensitivity.

Enjoy.

I used white Lubriplate on my '39 a couple years ago and lubed the speedo while I had the dash out for woodgraining and it was easy to get to the speedometer.

Runs dead quiet.

If you want a small amount of powdered graphite, PM your mailing address and I'll send you some. Years ago the company I worked for scrapped a (very) old tanker and before it went to the knackers I picked up a 5 lb. can of powdered graphite, about three lifetimes supply. I can spare enough to lube a few speedometer cables.

Ernie, my Packard experience is a bit limited, but what I gather from 'internet research' and from talking to experts, the Flackmaster for instance, the preferred engine replacement for the '38-'39 Super Eight was/is the 23-24th series 327 cid straight eight.

I believe there is a PMCC service letter to this effect.

If I recall correctly it should be almost a drop-in, some slight reworking of the firewall, I think.

Actually my '39 firewall looks to have been altered at one time, I'm assuming for the later engine. The rework is hidden by the '39 engine I installed. I guess I should have taken some pictures when the engine was out.

I get the impression very few of the '38-'39 320 engines appear to be driven to any great extent currently.

Best,
Jim

Good for you and your Dad, Kevin.
Thanks for the update, I was wondering where (and how) your '38 project was coming along.

Marks to both of you for staying with it.

Please keep the forum posted.

Simon, you may want to do some research on your project. There are some things that are one year only on your 1938 320" Super Eight engine.
Before you get too deeply into the project I suggest reading this link to Kevin's adventures with his '38 S8'
Be sure to read the ending.

The most important thing I would verify on your engine is the cast iron cylinder block's condition as they seem to be prone to cracking.

The engine lower ends also require some specialized parts and procedures.

Dave Flack (the Flackmaster)was a tremendous source of
help with my 39 Super Eight.

Best of luck.

Jim
