Re: 1954 Convertible Coupe Engine Overhaul Project

You might want to consider putting the thermostat back in place. Running without it can cause the coolant to flow through the radiator too quickly to cool sufficiently and lead to a hot running condition. The thermostat restricts the flow, enabling the coolant to spend more time in the radiator to cool off before being drawn back into the block.

Su8overdrive, Optima certainly had better news for you now than they had for me back in July; they wouldn't even give me an estimate on when they would have the 6 volt batteries available. On the weight issue, saving 30 pounds on a 4,640 pound car that is rarely used would seem to me to be insignificant in terms of performance or fuel economy enhancement. In addition to the almost 20% greater capacity in the NAPA 7212, the price was $110.00 less than the Optima. That was an unexpected benefit in buying the Napa 7212.

The decade-old Optima in my 1933 Eight failed last summer. At that time, no 6 volt Optimas were available anywhere and Optima wasn't saying when they would be available. My search led me to NAPA, their Commercial Battery Number 7212 just fits in the battery box area, has a 975 cold cranking amp rating and the terminals are in the proper locations. I ordered it online and picked it up the next day at a local NAPA store. It weighs 48 pounds but I was able to install it from underneath with the help of a couple of scissors jacks. As mentioned above it is a tight fit so you needn't worry about it falling over.

I've been unsuccessful in finding an OEM Packard accessory catalog for the Ninth and Tenth Series Packards. What I have found is the Eleventh Series Accessory catalog which is viewable on this site and the Tenth through Fourteenth Series Service Parts List. Both of these items show the vertical bar stone guard as the only guard available. That's why I surmised that they dropped the meshed guard when they brought out the veed grille in 1932.

The woven mesh stone guard material was used by Packard for their flat faced grilles used through the Eighth Series or 1931 models. When they brought out their veed radiator grilles for the Ninth Series (1932) through the Eleventh Series (1934) models, the OEM Packard accessory guards were redesigned with vertical bars as shown below.

Rather than it being a RHD export model, I think the negative of this photo was simply flipped. The two letters visible on the hood look like a backwards "D" and "R" rather than a "P" and "A."

Another option to consider is air shocks. I bought a set from Kanter and I really like that I can adjust the ride height based on the number of occupants in the back seat.

Your experience certainly demolishes my theory that the VPN is causing this. It must be coincidental that I never experienced the BAD IP message before I subscribed to a VPN. The other site that blocks me occasionally says "ACCESS DENIED" in large print and says I am not authorized to access the site. I've been registered with them since 2015, so that's perplexing. I can only hope that someone knows the cause and can let us know what the solution is to this problem.

Packard Don, I've had that same message at times on this and other sites. I think it is caused by my Virtual Private Network. The VPN masks your identity and location so the site's security system blocks access. If I turn off the VPN I can access the site in question. The funny thing is that this happens only sometimes, most times I can access these sites with the VPN turned on. I don't know why this happens.
