Should a person thinking about buying a 48-50 Packard (his first classic) embrace cars with the Ultramatic Transmission or run from cars with the Ultramatic Transmission? I would appreciate feedback especially in the area of transmission houses ability to repair the Ultramatic. Thanks in advance.

One of perhaps several Cleveland Public Library resources on Bishop & Babcock:

Hints for you on compressor displacement

1. "Cooling System for Vehicles" patent 2180760 was issued to E.L. Mayo of The Bishop & Babcock Mfg Co. (Cleveland) on 11/21/1939. The document shows the compressor in Fig 1 and 3 but there is no mention of displacement.

2. Antique Automobile Club has a blog entitled "air conditioning" starting on 10/30/2002 with a lot of interesting anecdotal conversation about early vehicle air conditioning.

3. The Cleveland Public Library may or may not have something that will help you. I will post it in a reply. You can go check out what is on the microfilm or I can if you can wait for my travel ban to be lifted after recent knee surgery. I am in drydock until maybe Feb 1.

I do not think the 42 Packard Clipper sold at auction today. I watched the bidding and recorded a high bid of $52,500 but there was no indication of a sale taking place.

Here is a typical long term storage fluid you should apply to all machined surfaces in 2-3 coats, each coat applied after previous coat is dry. Amsoil can help you with this product.

Long term storage:

1. How much does it weigh?
2. How long do you want to store it?
3. Recommendation A: store it laying flat in a single wall box with runners under the box to help you and your son-in-law to lift it.
4. Where are you going to store it? Indoors of course
5. You will need box, rust preventative spray (multiple coats) for all machined surfaces, including through holes and drill and tapped holes. You will need water proof paper to wrap head before placing in box. Wood will wick moisture to machined surface.

Alternative 1. Call an export packing company (i.e Crate Masters in Katy/Fort Worth) and find out how much they would charge you to perform this service.

Note: when you need to use the head, you will need a solvent to remove the the wax-like rust preventative. DO NOT USE A GRINDING WHEEL TO REMOVE DRIED RUST PREVENTATIVE EVER.

This eBay Packard is an example of my frustration with some ads.

The vehicle is described as a 49 Packard Super 8 which is Body No. 2272, Chassis 2202, w/ 327 in3 engine..

The first for digits of the VIN number are 2262 which infer a 49 Packard Deluxe 8 Body No. 2272, Chassis No. 2202, w/ 288 in3 engine.

This concern for accuracy is one of several examples that prompt my question regarding the 288, 327, 356 Spotters Guide.

What am I missing here?
