This will probably show my age but I apprenticed at a Studebaker -Packard dealership and finished my apprentice ship at a Chrysler dealer. I have literally replaced hundreds of rear axle bearings in my lifetime and have always preloaded them with zero failure. To each his own. Also free advice is exactly what its worth.

I have been a Mechanic for 60 years and have replaced many rear axle timken style bearings and they are not designed to have any end play. In fact they are designed to have some pre load. I think your axle and drum are moving sideways when you apply the brakes. try removing the end play and I think your problem will go away.

The clothpins theoretically acted as radiotor fins. I have never used them but those that did would swear that it worked. As for the old flatheads it was common to put one or sometimes two flat washers in the fuel pump arm. it almost looked like it was made for it .

That heat sheilding for the line from Amazon looks very similar to what I have put on my 37 fuel line and it has stopped my vapour locking. Mine is actually the shielding that is put on cars with headers for the spark plug wires.I do not have the fuel bowl but put an inline filter along the frame.

I have the braided ground strap from the battery positive to the frame and from there to the engine. I have a very heavy cble to the starter solenoid and .2 voltage drop, Ithink I have poor connection in the solenoid and will be replacing it when I have time.

Thank's for all the good advice. I am still playing with the idea as I have already replaced cables and terminals but I always have that feeling it might not start. So far it starts evey time.

Has anyone tried to use 8 volt battery and adjusted the regulator up to compensate?
A friend with a 41 ford flathead done his and has not had any problems and it sure cranks a lot faster giving him faster starting.

On my 37 it is definetly a slider and looks indentical to the picture. If it ever gave me aproblem I would have no trouble replacing it with a toggle. The mounting is not visible unless you bend down to see it
