1949 Packard 288 Full Restoration Project in Florida

Hello all! I am starting this forum to track a Packard project already underway. I’m done various boat and auto restorations in the past, but never have posted it along the way to a forum. Compared to some of the other projects I’ve done in the past information on Packard’s is a little harder to come by and I think it might be helpful to get feedback on issues as they come up.
This car comes from my wife’s family and lived most of its life up in Rochester NY. I still haven’t verified the VIN number and am not 100% sure what the model type is, but believe it is a 1948 Series 22 produced in 1949. It has a 288 CU Straight 8 under the hood.

This car last drove in the early 1990’s and from that time was stored in a garage. My brother-in-law spent some time trying to get it going again in the early 2010’s to no avail and the car eventually made its way down to Florida for a full refurb.

Hello,
Just finished rebuilding a 1949 288 Straight 8 engine and have fired it up. I'm going to run the break-in procedure next and since this motor is more unique than what I have rebuilt in the past I wanted to ask for any recommendations.

On previous motors I have initially gotten the engine up to temp, then increased RPM's to 2000 for 5 minutes, then increased RPM's to 3000 for 10 minutes, then decreased RPM's to 2000 for another 5 minutes. Shut off and change oil.

Any recommendations for this specific Packard flat head would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks for the info. I look into getting relined. Never had considered that as an option in the past.

The engine has solid lifters, so I'll go the route as you suggested.

Thank you!

1949 288 Custom Eight Packard Clutch

Hello, I've been rebuilding a 1949 288 Custom Eight engine and am getting close to firing it up. Prior to reinstalling the transmission I was hoping to replace the clutch, but am having a hard time finding a substitute from a local auto parts store. The standard specs are 10 tooth, 10'' OD and 1.125'' input shaft diameter. Does anyone have a PN that can be cross referenced as a replacement?

Also, I've read that some of the motors came with oil filters and others did not. This motor did not have the external system setup and I'm wondering if I keep it in the stock setup what the recommend oil change cycle is without a filter?

Thank you!
