Howard,
"the entire length of tubing and bulb pulled into the passenger compt and thru the mounting plate".

Can that be done without removing a portion of the dash? I seem to be missing the obvious.

Thank you for your reply on removing the gauge from the backing plate. I was able to get the bulb removed from the head by heating the head and applying Kroil penetrate to the bulb insert.
My problem now is getting that portion of the dash removed that houses the backing plate .

These prewar cars have a temp system that consist of a sending unit in the block that is connected to the gauge with a gas (ether) filled tube.
1. Has anyone had this repair ?
2. Did the whole temp gauge have to come out with the tube and sending unit intact?
3. If the gauge Must come, does the left 1/3 rd of the dash need to be removed to remove and replace the gauge?
4. If so how is that portion of the dash removed ?

The front side hood trim piece (4" x 6") has horizontal stripes that may have had body paint color in the concave lines . Is this a fact ?

What pressure should it take to operate the fuel pump arm ?
Pump is not functioning on the car . It probably takes at least 50 #s of force (off the car ) to get it to pump (which it does) .
