Great information, and thanks, everyone, for identifying this tool. I'll ask to get the two we have out of the case to determine the tool numbers!
Many thanks! Dave

Precision Packard Tool Question

I am a docent at America's Packard Museum in Dayton, Ohio. We have many precision tools Packard mechanics use and factory personnel to build or repair these automobiles. Several people have asked me what these tools are used for, and I would like to ask the members if they can identify the tool and its use.
The outer ring shown on the top has calibration markings around its total circumference, and the bored hole is precision honed. Given its size, I thought it might have something to do with the axle. Also, it's in a protective wooden box, so it is probably not thrown around the mechanic's workstation at the dealership. Can anyone help uncover what this was really used for? Dave Siewe ![]() ![]()

Thanks for the lead! Checked out their website and its a gold mine!
May I ask how much they charged you for the fuel sending unit? Did they refurbish your original or build a new one to spec? Just curious. Dave

Regarding the fuel sending unit, does anyone know the correct OHM for full to empty for the Custom Super Clipper? Also, there has been a reference to the float arm length from model to model. What would be the correct length for the Custom?
I have the original in the car and my mechanic replaced the cork float with brass, but never had the sending unit refurbished. Now that I've found a new tank, want to make sure once it's installed that everything is up to standard.

The 48 through 50 gas tank arrived today from the manufacturer. Here are close-up pictures of the tank and sending unit mounting area.
It is well manufactured, has the Packard Whistle attachment and seems to be a great find for those that need a new tank for their Packard from this model range. Attach file: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

An update from the manufacturer. The tank is zinc-coated galvanized steel and then powder coated black. It is a twenty-gallon unit and not the 17. Purchased the unit and with tax and delivery charges, came to $850.
Given that I've been looking for a tank for the car for over three years, it seemed a reasonable price to pay to keep the Custom running smoothly in the years to come. Thanks to everyone for their input! Dave

$750 with no shipping charges. Hey, if they are rare as hen's teeth, sounded like a deal to me!
Anything to keep the "47" rolling is a good solution. Dave

Hey Guys,
This has been invaluable information and thanks for all your responses. I've reached out again to the manufacturer of the tank to find out if it's a 17 or 20 gallon. Will keep you posted. If the "48" is similar to the "47" except for the fuel sending unit hole and number of bolt screws, I'll offer my old unit up to him and MAYBE we can see tanks for the "42 through 47" models! There's hope for us all yet! Dave
