Re: Getting ready for a Treadle Vac Replacement

My plan for the pedal ratio as long as I'm not missing something is to build a bracket/lever on the back of the stock pedal closer to the hinge point that drops down the back of the pedal to connect the boosters push rod. Kind of trying to hide it in the pedal arms recess.

However I'm not too sure if the Chevy unit is close to the same dimensions, and the suppliers don't seem like they want to give up too much info on them, at least over the web.

I would of course like to keep my Patrician as factory as possible.

I checked out the electroboost and like the looks of it, just want to solidify my plan before I go ahead and spend the cash.

Don't mean to be a bugger and ask the same old questions over again.

Hey thanks for the response, links would be great, as I don't know if it's my computer or the site acting up but I'm still getting the fatal error wen searching.

Also I assume there is no dual master that will bolt up to the BTV booster, without some sort of adapter plate.

Brakes are something I know little about other than swapping in and out stock stuff, but I have learned a lot from you guys on the forum, and the various BTV threads.

Getting ready for a Treadle Vac Replacement

I know there has been many a discussion about the treadle vac unit, however the search function is not working for me today, giving a fatal error.

My treadle vac failed while driving a few years back, just around the time I had learned of other people's units doing the same.

Long story short, no one was hurt and the patrician wasn't damaged.
However the car was drivin home, and the treadle vac was removed.
That's how it has sat for the past few years.

I have checked out the Panther project, and a couple of the other conversions done, and am starting to plan mine.

I understand the pedal ratio needing to change and size limitations on swapping a new unit in.

I'm currently looking at a BTV Replacement offered by ABS Power Brake, page 12 of their catalog, designed for the Chevys. However it's recommending a 6:1 ratio and have not heard back from abs about the mounting bolt spacing or the piston size. If this unit is generally the same dimensions as the BTV would I be safe to say the master cylinder will clear the steering colum, or am I still looking at a remote fill reservoir?

I'm curious if anyone has tried anything new since those conversions, and more specifically if anyone could foresee any fitment issues with one of the Chevy "treadle vac replacements" offered by abs power brake or one of the other vendors.

I'm sure it will get asked, but I have not yet dissasembled the BTV, however the MC has some crusty stuff in it, and right after the failure the MC was almost completely empty and had been checked and filled before my 30-50 mile drive. The BTV has sat on the shelf since removed.

Re: What oil do you use in your V8 Packard?

I've only had a few oil changes on my 56 Patrician, but the first few I used 10w-30 and had loud consistant lifter clatter, with the addition of bardhals istead o lead (recoomended to me on this forum and probably spelled incorrectly) lowered my lifter noise. However since then I've used strait 30 with Lucas oil stabilizer and the instead o lead and the only lifter noise I get is on hills.

I have not dropped my oil pan since I've owned the car, but I'm sure my oil flow problem is due to not cleaning or replacing the oil strainer.

I do! However I have never used one. A previous owner disassembled and cut the wiring harness, leaving it unserviceable to me and my current shop setup. I look forward to using someday, hopefully after a pro can rebuild it.

I didn't actually ask Where they planned on getting them, After looking at my car they decided to send me somewhere else, who sent me on my way back to my side of town to the shop down the road.

I talked to them for a while and he decided $350 for labor, (both sides) but I had to order the parts. And so I did and paid a bit too much for them, but I wanted to be sure they were right, but now I know that my local auto parts store would have been a better deal. Oh well..

However it turns out this project will be put aside and will leave the Patrician parked probably for some time. Due to I what I think would be burnt valves. I'm only guessing from the half quart of oil I have to put in every four days, and the copious amounts of black smoke out the rear.

I don't want to just do the topside of the block so I'm going to have to wait and get the whole thing rebuilt. Then with the block out, redo the front end.

I'm glad I got to drive it for a couple of months before it gets torn apart, I would have been fairly disappointed if I had never driven it in the four or five years I've had in now.

I surmise that mine broke the same way, I had to disconnect my speedo cable because everytime I drove the car I would get this horrible grinding noise. I thought at first it was my engine, but with the help of the guys on this forum I found out it was the speedo.

So if the needle broke off the stem the speedo is fubar?

Where does one lube the speedo, other than the cable?

Also does anyone know what color the needle is suppose to be? I have one sitting in a bits box from a dissasembled one, but it looks like someone sanded it!

Ok, so I've found I will be severly unequipped to handle this job myself, so I contacted Majhor Murrays here in Portland to see if they would want to work on my Patrician. They are mor than happy to help and a breeze to deal with, however they want about $1400 US to fix it. So I was wondering if anyone has had this done at a shop or know if this price sounds appropriate. Bruce at Majhor Murrays told me the parts come out to about $475 alone. Which I'm not going to argue with considering that was exactly what I found them for.

The work he was including was the upper control arm bushings, an the lower control arms as a unit. He was tellin me that the lower has to come as a unit and it not re-bushable. Is this true?

My Patrician can with the floor mounts for lap belts but no belts. And the cop of my cars order from studebaker doesn't show that for install.

Have you taken a look at PackardV8's thread "shoulder strap 55 executive"?

Idk if he explained his install but I'm sure he'd be mor than happy to provide you with details.

Hopefully this link works.https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_Id=2907&viewmode=flat&order=asc&mode=0&start=0

[Edit] sorry my link doesn't work, but if you search that topic it will come up.

Any ideas on why it returns no topic selected?
