What a great feeling it is to take a car (that most people would walk away from) and bring it back to life !
What a fantastic job your doing ! Congtats on the car!And a big thank you! For having the knowledge , guts and patience to build such a great website for all of us to enjoy. And for having the guts and patience for putting another great Packard back on the road. Not easy to do while raising a family and a 9 to 5.
My hats off to you Sir !
Thank you Kevin.

Looks like your correct with the points, make sure that the lead wires don't ground out in the distributor.
While you have the ditsributor out -you can check spark to all the secondary components.Run a jump wire from the engine block to the distributor housing and re-connect the dist to coil wire. With the spark plugs removed and properly grounded you should be able to see all 8 firing with a spin of the dist shaft with the ignition on. Note- don't touch the wire from the coil to the points- its painful.

Don't trust solid core wires, they will disapoint you.
Your local auto parts should carry all your tune up needs,I use the Napa Auto around the corner.Delco or Autolite parts are very common through the years.

Yes to all the above from OD.
The trans in mine didn't like straight 90wt.
Alot quiter and easier to shift whith the 85-140.

Run a compression test ,wet and dry.
You have (good?)spark and(good?) fuel.

It's possible you may have a bad condesor ?
Alot of great mechanics have pulled their hair out over a new condensor that was faulty.

I have seen this also happen when ignition switches are old and dirty or corroded.Run a 12awg jumper wire direct from the battery to the coil for a diagnosis.
Sounds like the starting circut is in good condition.
It starts easier with starting fluid could be a compression issue.I would check compression first.Good compression is needed for easy starting,in any weather.
Could be you need nothing more than to adjust the valves.

Would it be possible (and safe) to look under the car when it is in gear to check to see if the driveshaft is rotating?
Or -if the speedometer is showing that its traveling-you may have an axle issue.

Charge that battery before you go any further !
If you don't already have one, invest in a VOM .
A fully charged 6 volt battery should be around 6.4 volts.
Check the battery voltage while trying to turn the engine over with the starter. If it drops to less than about 4.5 volts your battery may be failing.
If it doesn't drop,or drops very little you have a poor connection.
Thats when you can preform a voltage drop test to find it.

The VOM is the easy way to check for all the problems in a starting circut.
Even a "cheap" one lets you see the magic smoke that is inside the wire, before you let it out ! lol

I'm a little confused.
Will the engine turn over ?
Or does it turn over and not start ?
Or did I miss something in the 1st post ?
